Mimi's excellent thoughts on polar ice caps

Mimi's follow up for week 8
For reading this week my group read this article: What Is a Polar Ice Cap?

The new ideas I have now I’ve read this text are:

  • Give everybody free solar panels.
  • Try biking or walking to school
  • Use beeswax wraps
  • Turn of a light when you are not using it
  • Get a compost bin
  • Get a worm farm
  • use reusable containers
  • Pick up rubbish

I now better understand that if we do not make a change the earth will die and we will die with it. We are
harming the planet by what we are doing and there are many solutions to fix this but we haven't done anything
to stop this. If we really do care we need to work our hardest to make a change so that we can stop the polar
ice caps melting. 😃

What do you know about polar ice caps ?
What could you do to stop polar ice caps melting ?
What do you think we can do to stop climate change ?

What is happening to our earth?

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO OUR EARTH
This week Erika lingard came to our hub to talk to us about saving the planet because of what we are doing to it and what our future will be like if we do not stop this. Erika used to be a preschool teacher and one of the many jobs she had was taking out the rubbish everyday there was so many bags of rubbish that she thought to herself where does all this stuff end up what will the future be like if we keep on doing this she didn't like what was happening so she made a company called Eco-me to help

It was Wednesday afternoon when Erika ( Charlie's mum) walked in the door for a visit. She started to explain to us what is happening to our earth she said if we do keep on using plastic cutting down trees without replanting them and throwing rubbish on the ground animals will die we will have no oxygen our seas will be filled with plastic  and the air will be all polluted with smoke for example if we go to a restaurant and order a piece of fish we will cut it open and inside there will be plastic in his tummy this is what our future will be like soon so make sure that look after our earth.

These are the products she has created and I am going to tell you about them. She has created forever pegs these pegs are designed to last forever they are made from stainless steel you might be wondering if these will rust they will not rust so they can be used in your pantry fridge or freezer but they can still be used on your washing line. She also made reusable straws these straws are also made from stainless steel so you can take them out to a cafe or when you are getting a takeaway you use these straws instead of plastic straws she also makes sporks and chopsticks they are stainless steel as well so you can use them the same way.

she makes net bags they are made to last long and they are designed for the supermarket they have a weight tag on the side so they don't rip and the good think is that when they are worn out they can go in the green bin. she also makes reusable coffee cups they are made from stainless steel and they come in two colors the lid flicks back so when you are drinking your coffee it doesn't hit you in the nose. She packages all her products in recyclable items if you want to know more go check out Eco-me.

If you did something to help the earth what would you do?

Mimi's Amazing PBL action

                                                                PBL - Term 1

This term our Project Based Learning (PBL) has been about kindness and the big question was: How can we build community through our actions?

First, we explored some collaborative activities and discussed how we could include kindness and build a sense of community through our actions at camp. Next, we were organised into groups where we had to unpack the above question. In our groups we considered how we could spread community and kindness through our entire school community. We decided that we would offer something that was free and would make others happy.

We created an action plan and we decided to spread kindness by making the teachers feel thanked because of all the hard work they do for us so we have chosen to make a kindness gift basket

Reflection:
For our final product: It was fun it and we enjoyed it it was a little bit hard to find out what the teachers liked and what we should put in it but in the end it all came together and our final product was a kindness gift basket.

How did our action build a sense of community in the school: this made community by making the teachers feel like everyone cares about all the hard work they do for us  if it wasn't for the teachers we would know nothing we know now.

I contributed by trying to find ideas of what to make and how to make the gift basket. I also helped with the kindness quotes and what to put in the gift basket.

I think the PBL might impact on the teachers by making them feel thanked and happy to be thought about and making the teachers know that we all care even though sometimes we might not show it.

What I learned about working with others was that it was hard but we had to collaborate with others to make it work and turn out the way we wanted to be. I would love to do this again because it was fun to work and get to know new people. I had such a great fun this was a great experience

                          1.  if you got to choose one food that you were given what would it be ?
                        2.  what would you choose to do for your action plan what would you do ?
